Our ADHD assessments gather information from multiple sources, including symptom checklists, standardised behaviour rating scales, past and current functioning, and details from family members or people who know you well.
We will first ask you to complete a series of pre-assessment questionnaires before conducting a comprehensive diagnostic interview called the DIVA-5. This appointment will be between you and an experienced psychiatrist and will determine the presence of core symptoms of ADHD.
Information from these sources will determine whether you have ADHD based on the number and severity of your symptoms and the degree to which these symptoms impact your day-to-day life.
Before your assessment, you'll receive several questionnaires. One should be completed by a parent or someone who knew you well during childhood. During the assessment, we'll refer to this person as your "informant", and their role is to provide additional information to help us make an accurate diagnosis.
Your pre-assessment questionnaires and your diagnostic interview will ask questions to establish whether ADHD was present when you were younger and how much it impacted you.
Ideally, your informant will also attend part of your assessment. However, if this isn't possible, we will ask you to prepare examples of how your ADHD symptoms impacted you during childhood. This information will be shared with your psychiatrist during the assessment.
Please note that information about your childhood, and the potential presence of ADHD at an early age, is essential for us to provide a diagnosis. Without it, we may not be able to diagnose you with ADHD.
This will depend entirely on your specific requirements and the assessment outcome. We do not provide medication during the assessment. If your clinician recommends medication following your assessment, the process of trialling and getting the correct dosage level (titration) typically involves between three and four subsequent appointments, plus the medication cost. 30-minute sessions cost £225, with 50-minute sessions costing £310.
If you require a repeat prescription outside of an appointment, this will incur an administration fee of £75.
We can only prescribe medication with sufficient knowledge of your physical health. Therefore, before we give you a prescription, we will ask to see the results of physical health checks, which you can ask your NHS GP, or a private GP, to perform. These checks will include blood pressure, pulse rate, height and weight. Depending on your current health and medical history, you may also need blood tests and an ECG before your initial prescription.
We recommend discussing arranging a private ADHD assessment with your GP before booking your assessment. You will need to find out whether they can offer the titration service and, if not, whether they can enter a shared care agreement with us once you are stable on the medication.
If your GP feels comfortable initiating, titrating and monitoring medication, they may choose to do so based on the diagnosis within your report.
Another possible way forward is for the GP to refer to the local NHS ADHD service to initiate, titrate and stabilise medication. However, if your GP cannot provide this, you can access our titration service.
Our titration service includes a 30-minute initiation appointment with a follow-up letter and prescription, followed by three to four 30-minute titration appointments with follow-up letters, prescriptions and further recommendations.
Once we have stabilised your treatment, you can ask your GP to take over prescribing in a shared care agreement. However, this cannot always be guaranteed, so checking beforehand with your GP is always advisable.
