Reiner Heun

Professor Heun is an exceptionally accomplished clinician. He is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, as well as being a Consultant Neurologist, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist.

Professor Heun is a Senior General Adult Psychiatrist working for Derbyshire Health Care NHS Foundation Trust, he is also:

  • Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Bonn, Germany
  • Editor of the journal European Psychiatry & the journal of the European Psychiatric Association,
  • Member of the Dementia and Neurodegenerative Research Network Clinical Studies Group
  • Local scientific coordinator of the UK Mental Health Research Network for Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Regular Member of the Clinical Studies Board of the American Alzheimer Association

In his private practice Professor Heun sees patients experiencing anything from mild to severe mental health difficulties, across the full range of presentations.

His areas of specialism include general adult psychiatry, old age psychiatry, schizophrenia, depression and OCD. He also travels nationally to provide expert medico legal assessment and reports.

Professor Heun is the chair of the British Medical Association Birmingham division and a Senior Fellow of the Institute of Mental Health at Nottingham University. He is the editor of the journal European Psychiatry.

Professor Heun has written more than 500 papers, book chapters, posters, abstracts including more than 220 peer-reviewed publications.

Professor Heun is a highly experienced medico legal expert and has prepared reports on subjects including:

  • psychiatric disorders
  • traumata or events causing psychiatric problem or disorders
  • mental health act legislation
  • guardianship and mental capacity legislation
  • evaluation of conflicting psychiatric reports
  • preparation of final second-opinion summary reports
  • presentation of psychiatric evidence to courts

He is a Section12 approved Mental Health Act assessor (MHA 1983 and consecutive legislation) during office hours and during on-call out-of-hours, as well as a Deprivation of Liberty Assessor for Derbyshire County Council.
