Autism assessments

What is an autism assessment?

An autism assessment explores how you process social communication, emotions, relationships and social interaction. It helps identify whether the differences you experience align within the profile of autism.

Our assessments are led by experienced clinicians who specialise in autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. They’ll explore your life experiences, strengths, and challenges - often with input from someone who knows you well, ideally someone who knew you in childhood.

As part of the process, clinicians consider the recognised diagnostic criteria for autism, which look at two key areas:

Differences in social communication and interaction such as understanding social cues, developing relationships, and expressing or interpreting emotions.

Restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or sensory experiences such as a strong need for routine, focused interests, or heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or change.

Our clinicians explore these areas through conversation and observation, to understand how you experience the world. The goal is to help you understand yourself better, recognise what support could make life easier, and find clarity - whether or not you receive a formal diagnosis.

Why might I want an assessment?

Adults seek autism assessments for many different reasons.

You might:

  • Have always felt “different” and want to understand why

  • Be struggling with exhaustion, anxiety, or burnout from masking or camouflaging

  • Recognise autistic traits in yourself after learning more about neurodivergence

  • Want clarity to help explain your needs to others, including at work or in relationships

  • Be seeking support or reasonable adjustments through your GP, workplace, or education setting

An assessment can help you understand yourself better, explain your needs to others, and make practical, personalised changes that make life easier.

Talking therapies

Many autistic adults find talking therapies helpful, especially when it’s shaped around how they communicate and process emotions.

Therapy isn’t about changing who you are. It’s a space to explore and understand yourself, work through challenges, and find practical ways to make life feel steadier and more sustainable.

Our approach

Clinical Partners therapists are experienced in working with autistic adults and use a range of evidence-based approaches, for example, adapting Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to meet individual needs.

Together with your therapist, you’ll agree the pace, structure, and focus of sessions so they feel comfortable and relevant to you.
