Choosing the right professional for trauma support

Finding the right professional to support you through trauma recovery is an important step. In this video, Dr Andrea Pickering explains that it’s best to seek out someone trained in trauma-focused therapies, such as CBT, trauma-focused CBT, or EMDR, and ideally with experience supporting many patients through similar challenges. Checking a therapist’s qualifications and training can also provide reassurance that they are equipped to guide you safely through the process.

Equally important, Andrea highlights, is choosing someone you feel comfortable talking to. Trauma often involves deeply personal and sensitive experiences, so feeling safe enough to open up is essential for progress. The right therapist will not only have the right skills but will also create a space where you feel understood, respected, and supported on your journey to recovery.
