We offer autism assessments for adults under Right to Choose. Find out more about the referral process, our wait times, and your assessment.
Step by step
You will receive an email to confirm that your GP has submitted a referral. This will include a referral number, which helps us find your details more easily.
Preparing for your assessment
Choose your informant
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, and a key part of the assessment is understanding your development over time, not just how things feel for you now.
As part of the assessment, we complete a structured interview (ADI R) with someone you nominate, known as your informant. The ADI R includes detailed questions about your development in early childhood, often focusing on the ages of 4 to 5, as well as questions about how you present day to day now. Because of this, your informant should ideally be someone who knew you during both periods.
Where possible, we recommend choosing a parent. If that is not possible, another family member may be suitable. In some cases, a long time friend or partner may also be able to support parts of the interview, depending on what they know about your early development and current presentation.
When you book, we will explain how to choose an informant and how to share the appointment details and questionnaires with them. You are encouraged to attend the informant appointment as well.
Complete the pre-assessment questionnaires
Before your assessment, you and your informant will need to complete some questionnaires. We’ll need these at least 48 hours before your appointment.
There are three questionnaires for you, which will be in your portal to complete. There’s one questionnaire for your informant, and we’ll email you the link to this one for you to share with your informant.
Your assessment
Two specialist clinicians will work with you as part of the assessment. Each clinician focuses on a different part of the picture, so we can understand your strengths, needs and day to day experiences as fully as possible.
We gather information from multiple sources, including your questionnaires, your appointment, and an appointment with someone you nominate who knows you well.
How our online assessments work
Our Right to Choose assessments are conducted online via secure video call, ensuring accessibility, comfort, and high clinical standards for patients across England.
Remote assessments eliminate the need for travel, allowing you to complete them from the privacy of your own home without interruption.
Observing your home environment provides valuable insights into your or your child's preferences, challenges, and family interactions.
Remote assessments are as robust as face-to-face, and are conducted by trained clinicians using evidence-based tools.
Assessments must be conducted on a computer, not a mobile phone, to ensure clear visuals and sound quality which are essential for a thorough assessment.
If a remote assessment presents challenges for you or your child due to specific access needs, we will work with you to explore possible adjustments.
