What can Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists help with?
Psychiatry is the medical speciality of the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mental disorders.
Child and adolescent Psychiatrists can help your child with a wide variety of mental health issues and will be able to diagnose conditions, as well as advise on treatment plans.
A Psychiatrist is a medically trained professional; they will have completed their medical training, followed by specialist higher training in psychiatry. Following completion of their higher training they will go on to become Consultant grade, which usually takes at least 10 years. Because they have completed medical training they are able to prescribe medication, which Psychologist and Psychotherapists cannot.
Common conditions that a child and adolescent Psychiatrist can diagnose are:
- Anxiety disorders, including OCD
- Eating disorders and body image issues
- Autistic spectrum Disorders including Asperger’s
- ADHD and ADD
- Bipolar Disorder
Following your appointment with the Psychiatrist, your child may be recommended to see a Psychologist or Psychotherapist for further treatment. We can help arrange this treatment privately or you may wish to be treated by the NHS. Hyperlink to child and adolescent psychology and psychotherapy
