Diagnosis - I just don't agree with my doctor

There are many reasons you may not agree with your doctor. It could be you have some symptoms, and the doctor can't seem to make the correct diagnosis. You keep getting test after test, or try treatment after treatment, all to no avail. It might be you are convinced there is something physically wrong with you, and yet the doctor doesn't agree. Alternatively, you might feel perfectly fine, but your relatives or friends have contacted the doctor who has made a rather unwelcome home visit, and arrived at diagnoses you are amazed or perplexed by.

Is it the wrong diagnosis?

It could be that you want a problem solved, and your doctor doesn't agree they can solve it or that it should be resolved. It might be that you want to change treatments, but your doctor is in conflict with you over this. You might need a report or letter and your physician has refused to supply one to your satisfaction.

Even if the disagreement isn't major, it's unlikely any of us see completely eye to eye with every doctor we've ever encountered. Medicine is a complex and uncertain business, and what it feels like to be a patient may never be fully captured by tests or a clinical interview. Not every doctor's personality suits all patients.

Medical Second Opinion

Getting a second opinion is fraught with all sorts of snags. You may be afraid of alienating or irritating your current doctor. You may not know who to turn to. We are particularly interested in improving the experience of seeing a clinician and welcome giving second opinions, or trying to help get to the bottom of where things have gone wrong in relationships with doctors in the past. We encourage a frankness and openness in the consultation which is unusual, because we fundamentally believe that a disagreement expressed in the session, is much more useful than one harboured afterwards.

We understand the politics (with a small p) that underlies seeing other doctors in comparison to the one you are used to, and can help handle this. Getting the right opinion does sometimes require 'shopping around' and we endeavour make that process as painless as possible. This is why our professional guides who answer our phones know all our clinicians well, and can provide in-depth guidance as to the kind of person you might want to see.
