The symptoms of the menopause can be both physical and emotional. Uncomfortable physical symptoms occur in 80% of women and include: hot flushes; night sweats; irregular, heavy or scant periods; dry or itchy skin; aches and pains; tiredness; insomnia and sleep disturbance; bladder problems and vaginal dryness.

In addition to these physical symptoms many women also suffer from psychological issues including: panic attacks; poor memory and concentration; irritability; decrease in sexual desire and depression.

Depression during Menopause

The menopause can trigger episodes of sadness and depression. It is thought that somewhere between 8% and 15% of menopausal women experience some form of depression. Menopausal depression is most likely to occur during perimenopause, the phase leading up to menopause.

Controversy continues as to how much of these emotional symptoms can be put down to biological changes, and how much are down to the significant psychological and sociological transitions also occurring at this moment.

After all this period of midlife is also a time when women redefine their roles as daughters, wives and mothers. They are often losing roles from which they had derived their primary identities, eg so called 'empty nest syndrome', while at the same time the body starts to falter. This is why the correct treatment of this cluster of problems involves skilled understanding of the complex biology involved as well as the various psychological issues.
