BDD is a chronic illness and symptoms are likely to persist if left untreated. The disorder can significantly diminish an individual quality of life and create social anxiety. It often leaves the individual feeling demoralized and can lead to clinical depression. In extreme cases is can lead to suicidal ideation and 7% of sufferers attempting suicide.
Recent research has established that some people do indeed perceive appearance differently to others, and can be more acutely aware of what others would consider relatively minor deviations from 'normal' or 'beautiful' in physical form.
People with BDD become overly preoccupied with some aspect of their body. The most common complaints relate to the nose, hair, skin, eyes, chin lips and the overall build of the body as well as the breasts and genitals.
Onset of symptoms generally occurs in adolescence or early adulthood. It is often believed women are affected more than men but research shows that it affects men and women equally.
A recent study found that up to 5% of the population is affected by BDD at any one time. Another study also found that up to 12% of patients seeing dermatologists and up to 15% of patients seeking cosmetic surgery had a diagnosis of BDD.
BDD is a treatable illness using medication and counseling. Depending on your symptoms we would undertake an assessment with you and create a bespoke treatment programme for you.
